A Chemical and Histochemical Study of the Lipides of the Pyloric Cecum of the Starfish, Asterias Forbesi

چکیده
The lipides of the diverticula of Asterias forbesi have been studied by histochemical and biochemical means. Correlations between results obtained by histochemical examination of sections, and chemical analysis of isolated lipide have been made, particularly with respect to phosphatides, steroids, and aldehyde lipides. The results of the histochemical study were in good agreement with the chemical data as to the nature of the phosphatide fraction, the presence of acetone-soluble aldehyde lipides, and the composition of the free droplet fat. Homogenized diverticula were differentially centrifuged in order to establish the distribution of types of lipides in the various cellular components. In addition, data have been presented which demonstrate a direct correlation between the titer of alpha-glycerol ethers and that of acetone-soluble lipide acetals in the unsaponifiable fraction.

Solute Secretion by the Tube Foot Epithelium in the Starfish Asterias Forbesi
1. The K and Cl~ levels and osmotic concentration of the tube feet fluid in intact starfish (Asterias forbesi) are higher than that in the external sea water or perivisceral (coelomic) fluid. 2. The increase in K+ in the fluid in the tube feet lumen is brought about by the active secretion of K+ by the tube feet epithelium. 3. No exchange of material from the external environment with the more ...
متن کاملCalcium transients during early development in single starfish (Asterias forbesi) oocytes
Maturation and fertilization of the starfish oocyte are putative calcium-dependent events. We have investigated the spatial distribution and temporal dynamics of this calcium dependence in single oocytes of Asterias forbesi. We used the calcium photoprotein, aequorin, in conjunction with a microscope-photomultiplier and microscope-image intensifier. Surprisingly, in contrast to earlier work wit...
متن کاملIsolation and characterization of a primitive interleukin-1-like protein from an invertebrate, Asterias forbesi.
Interleukin 1 (IL-1) is the major immunoregulatory molecule produced by macrophages and other related cells. It acts as the molecular orchestrator of nonspecific host defense mechanisms against multifarious insults. In this study we report the characterization of an IL-1-like protein from the starfish Asterias forbesi. IL-1-like activity was found in the coelomocytes of this invertebrate and wa...
متن کاملField contamination of the starfish Asterias rubens by metals. Part 1: Short- and long-term accumulation along a pollution gradient.
The accumulation of Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu in the starfish Asterias rubens was studied in a Norwegian fjord characterized by a gradient of metal pollution in the sediments, ranging from very high metal concentrations at its head to much lower levels at its opening. The concentrations of metals in starfish from natural populations along the gradient (long-term accumulation) and in starfish that were...
متن کاملIdentification of novel SALMFamide neuropeptides in the starfish Marthasterias glacialis.
The SALMFamides are a family of neuropeptides found in species belonging to the phylum Echinodermata and which act as muscle relaxants. The first two members of this family to be identified were both isolated from the starfishes Asterias rubens and Asterias forbesi and are known as S1 (GFNSALMFamide) and S2 (SGPYSFNSGLTFamide). However, little is known about the occurrence and characteristics o...
